As Strange New Worlds’ unique gimmick among Star Trek series is Doing Every Genre, so Discovery’s is that the characters do nothing except talk about their feelings all the time (except saving the galaxy every week). I found this to be an annoying defect in Seasons 1–3 and went on a long hiatus. Now I’m catching up with Season 4 and I perceive it differently, having maybe changed myself, but also finding that the series has shifted away from sentimental monologues that are just more of the same towards a systematic exploration of different ways to be traumatized, and dealing with it, in the 4th millennium: various factions are making peace with their former oppressors, someone is dealing with the knowledge of having been the cause of a galactic disaster, someone lost their home world to yet another, ongoing galactic disaster, a doctor who was dead for a while is avoiding dealing with that trauma by trying to help everyone else, Burnham is full of a guilty sense of irreplaceability as ever, someone is transitioning into a new body and profession, and the ship’s computer, of all things, develops emotions. A bit silly, maybe, but executed with commitment and creativity, and you gotta respect that – that’s what Discovery is.
